What it involves
Keeping the vegetation on a dam wall, embankment or bund short enough that the structure can be visually inspected and does not develop woody root intrusion.
Why it has not been done
Embankments have to be inspectable, and woody growth on a wall is a genuine structural concern rather than an aesthetic one. But the batters are steep by design, often wet at the toe, and sit directly above water, which rules out both conventional mowers and chemical control.
How we do it
Remote-controlled flail mowers work the face at up to 55 degrees with nobody on the slope, and low ground pressure limits surface disturbance on soft ground. No chemicals are used at all, which removes any question about what ends up in the water.
