Most people call about a plant before they know its name, which is completely normal. Each page below starts with how to identify the species, then covers why it is a problem, what spraying does and does not achieve, and how it actually gets cleared. If you are still unsure, send a photo with your estimate request and we will tell you what it is.
One thing worth saying up front: none of these methods, ours included, removes the seed bank already in your soil. Some regrowth is normal. Anyone promising permanent one-visit eradication of gorse is not describing gorse.
Ulex europaeusGorseThe big one. Dense, spiny, seeds for decades, and it takes hold on exactly the slopes a tractor cannot work.
Solanum mauritianumWoolly nightshadeFast, tall, toxic to handle, and a declared pest plant across most of the North Island. Second only to gorse for search interest.
Wilding pinesA national problem at landscape scale. Catch them small and it is a mulching job; leave them and it becomes a forestry operation.
Rubus fruticosusBlackberryLow, dense, thorny and endlessly persistent. The classic gully and fence-line invader.
BambooDense, woody and famously hard to get rid of. This is where material capacity actually decides whether the job is possible.
Cortaderia selloana / jubataPampas grassHuge clumps, prolific windborne seed, and a serious fire load. Common on banks, roadsides and coastal margins.
Pennisetum clandestinumKikuyuNot scrub, but it gets away from people just as badly. Rank kikuyu on a bank defeats most mowers.
Cytisus scopariusBroomGorse's close relative without the spines. Same long-lived seed bank, same habit of taking over steep and stony ground.
Ligustrum sinense / lucidumPrivetA shelterbelt escapee that becomes a gully full of woody stems, and a genuine health complaint for the neighbours.
Clematis vitalbaOld man's beardA smothering climber that collapses whole bush margins under its own weight. One of the most damaging weeds in New Zealand.
