Working in Coromandel

Coromandel jobs tend to be smaller in area and harder per square metre than anywhere else we work. A lot of properties are holiday homes, which means vegetation gets a season or two ahead of the owner before anyone deals with it, and the slope behind the house is exactly the ground a person should not be standing on with a scrub bar. Summer fire risk is a genuine driver here, and firebreak work around dwellings and settlements is a regular request.

The country here

Steep, bush-clad and coastal, with a narrow road network and a lot of properties perched on faces that fall away hard behind them. This is the region where the 55 degree capability stops being a specification and starts being the only reason a job is possible at all. Getting the machine to site is often as much of the planning as the clearing itself.

What dominates in Coromandel

  • Gorse, on coastal faces and every retired slope
  • Pampas, heavy along the coast and roadside banks
  • Wilding pines spreading from plantation and shelter edges
  • Blackberry and woolly nightshade through gullies and bush margins

Councils and compliance

Thames-Coromandel District Council and Waikato Regional Council

Waikato Regional Council sets the regional pest rules, and Thames-Coromandel District Council manages reserves, roadsides and coastal esplanade land. Fire risk carries real weight here over summer, which is often what finally triggers a clearing job.
