Working in Hawke's Bay and Gisborne

Severe weather has shaped a lot of the work available in this region, and recovery clearing, reopening tracks, clearing slip faces and debris, and getting back onto country that became inaccessible, remains a regular request. Our machines are low ground-pressure and remote-controlled, which matters on soft and unstable faces where the risk of putting an operator and a heavy machine on the slope is the whole problem. Vineyard and orchard work on the flats is a different and steadier line of work.

The country here

Steep, soft and erosion-prone hill country on the East Coast, with the flats and terraces of the Heretaunga and Gisborne plains below it. The hill country is the defining feature: it slips, it is hard to get machinery onto safely, and it carries a lot of ground that has gone out of production because of exactly that.

What dominates in Hawke's Bay and Gisborne

  • Gorse, widespread across retired and slip-affected hill country
  • Blackberry, through gullies, stream margins and slip faces
  • Old man's beard on bush margins and shelterbelts
  • Regrowth scrub on land that has come out of production

Councils and compliance

Hawke's Bay Regional Council and Gisborne District Council

Hawke's Bay Regional Council runs the regional pest plan and a significant erosion and land management programme, while Gisborne District Council is a unitary authority covering both roles. Land stability and erosion carry more weight in this region than almost anywhere else, and clearing plans often need to account for it.
