Working in Auckland
Auckland work is dominated by two things: the gullies and the neighbours. A large share of enquiries start with a complaint or a compliance letter about privet, or with a section that has become so overgrown the owner cannot get to their own back boundary. Both are access problems more than vegetation problems, and both are why remote-controlled machinery gets called instead of a chainsaw crew. Sites are tighter here than anywhere else we work, so send photos of the entrance as well as the vegetation.
The country here
A dense network of steep bush gullies threading through suburbs, and rural lifestyle country at both ends in Rodney and Franklin. Access is the defining Auckland constraint: the site is often behind a house, down a bank, with a narrow side entrance and neighbours on both boundaries. Our machines get in through as little as 1.4m of entry width, which decides a lot of Auckland jobs.
What dominates in Auckland
- Woolly nightshade, everywhere through the gully network
- Privet, both tree and Chinese, and the region's biggest source of vegetation complaints
- Old man's beard, smothering gully bush margins
- Pampas and gorse on motorway batters and open ground
Councils and compliance
Auckland Council
Auckland Council is a unitary authority, so it handles both the regional pest management plan and local reserves and roadside work. Privet is treated seriously here on health grounds, and a formal neighbour complaint about it is a common reason people call us.

Weeds we clear in Auckland
- PrivetA shelterbelt escapee that becomes a gully full of woody stems, and a genuine health complaint for the neighbours.
- Woolly nightshadeFast, tall, toxic to handle, and a declared pest plant across most of the North Island. Second only to gorse for search interest.
- Old man's beardA smothering climber that collapses whole bush margins under its own weight. One of the most damaging weeds in New Zealand.
- Pampas grassHuge clumps, prolific windborne seed, and a serious fire load. Common on banks, roadsides and coastal margins.
Who we work for in Auckland
- Lifestyle blocksThe back third of the block that got away. Usually a bank, a gully, or a boundary nobody has reached in years.
- Utilities and solarEasements, corridors and solar arrays kept clear, mechanically, without chemical programmes.
- Subdivisions and site prepGetting a block from overgrown to workable, with nothing to truck off site.
- Conservation and restorationClearing pest plants off a site so it can be planted, without chemicals and without losing what is worth keeping.
