How fine can you mulch?
Mulching cuts and processes vegetation into fine material that is left on the ground, helping to suppress regrowth and protect the soil surface. It reduces standing biomass and creates a cleaner, more manageable site that is easier to maintain long-term.
How fine the finish comes out depends on what went in and how many passes the site gets. Light scrub and soft growth reduce to a fairly fine, even layer in a single pass. Heavy woody material at the top of the size range leaves a coarser layer, and a second pass over the same ground brings it down further if a finer finish is what the site needs.
It is worth being clear about what you actually want, because it changes the job. Clearing so a block can be seen, walked and assessed needs less than clearing to a fine even layer ready for planting or a tidy presentation finish. Both are available; they take different amounts of time.
The mulch layer does more than look tidy. It shades the soil surface, which slows germination from the seed bank, and it protects freshly cleared ground from rain impact, genuinely useful on steep faces where erosion after clearing is a real risk.
Over time the layer breaks down into the soil. On most sites it is noticeably reduced within a season or two, faster on warm northern country and slower on cold or exposed sites.
